Osgood Lecture
Where’s the Wisdom in Healthcare
The graduating residents and faculty were very pleased to welcome Dr. James Weinstein as the
2010 Osgood Visiting Professor. As the Editor-in-Chief of Spine, an award-winning scholar, and Principal Investigator of the
Spine Patient Outcomes Research Trial (SPORT) - the largest study ever funded by the National Institute of Arthritis and
Muscoloskeletal and Skin Diseases at the NIH - HCORP was honored to have him participate in the discussion of the graduating
chief resident’s thesis projects. The kickoff of the graduation day event was his talk “Where’s the wisdom in healthcare?” With
his rich background in epidemiology and policy, he artfully depicted how care and outcomes vary from region to region in the
United States. He also spoke of the monochromatic application that people submit for acceptance to medical school. He suggested
that this traditional approach may actually contribute to heterogeneous outcomes. He gave the example of Dartmouth
Medical School, where they are now seeking out alternative applicants with different backgrounds and skill sets to enrich the
overall field of medicine. Dr. Weinstein’s wisdom and forethought will clearly shape the future of medicine in the Unites States
of America. Thank you Dr. Weinstein. |
