After losing 5th year starters Charlie Petit, Steve Mattheos,
and Ray Hwang to the big leagues many thought the Harvard
Combined Orthopaedic Surgery basketball team would have a
serious rebuilding year. However with returning players Robert
Boykin (PGY-3), Kanu Okike (PGY-2), and Jared Lee (PGY-2)
from the 2008 Championship Team and the addition of Babjide
Ogunseinde (PGY-5), Darren Lebl (PGY-4), Sang Kim (PGY-2),
Mike Baratz (PGY-1), Rich Lee (Spine Fellow), and Jeff Knott
(BIDMC spine PA) the Tomes had a great showing.
Overall the team was very competitive in the MGH league
at Basketball City in Boston playing against other departments
in the hospital. For what they may have lacked in terms of
height this year they made up with brute orthopaedic force and
strength, continuing the Mattheos legacy. In addition, both
Jared Lee and Robert Boykin finished the season amongst the
top five scorers in the league. The team suffered a devastating
final minute loss to the eventual champions in the playoffs, but
are poised to regain the trophy with the majority of the players
returning in 2010.
The team would like to thank Dr. Rubash for his continued
sponsorship and generous support. All attendings, fellows, and
residents with basketball experience are welcome to join the
team in the coming year. The Tomes will continue to strive
for a level of excellence on and off the court, and with that in
mind pre-season practice will begin soon (*this does not count
toward work hours). We anticipate an even bigger, stronger, and
faster team this year with the availability of the newly opened
Resident Library at the MGH.
