Despite the inclement weather, 68 hearty golfers made it
out to the 6th Annual Harvard Orthopaedic Golf Outing held at the Sandy
Burr Country Club on May 28th, 2004. The monsoon-like conditions in the
morning could not dampen the spirits of these orthopaedic surgeons, who
on this day gave up the knife for a golf club. By the 2nd hole, the
conditions were near perfect, with the sun shining high and bright.
However, nobody was safe on this day--least of all an
unwitting largemouth bass, which was taken out by a smouldering 30-yard
fish-bound drive by Samantha Spencer. Sam would eventually win the
Barry Simmons Award for the most outrageous moment of the day.
Some of the other award winners of the day included Dave
Cashen (longest drive, men), Susie Stewart (longest drive, women), Karl
Schultz (closest to pin) and Sean Rassman (most dangerous golfer). The
winning team of Lars Richardson, Steve Matheos, John Bonnell and Mark
Price shot a low score of 11 under par.
Joe Czarnecki, Bob O'Toole, Sean Rassman, Renn Crichlow
and Lauren Ellis did a wonderful job organizing this year's outing. Our
tradition of camaraderie outside of the hospital continues to grow, and
we look forward to next year's event.
