The 12th annual Harvard Orthopedics Golf Tournament
took place on Friday May 28th, 2010 at the Sandy Burr Golf
Club in Wayland, Massachusetts. It was once again a huge
success with almost 70 golfers enjoying the fantastic weather
and great camaraderie. We couldn’t have asked for a better day
with sunny skies and highs in the mid 70s.
The golf course was in excellent shape and the golfing was
surprisingly good as well. This year, each golfer received a 5’ x
6’ charcoal fleece blanket with an embroidered Harvard emblem
and a sleeve of Titleist golf balls. The event was kicked off with
a barbecue lunch on the patio and it concluded with a dinner
in the clubhouse with steak tips, grilled chicken and sausages.
The winning score (10-under par) was posted by both Team
Wedge Fracture (Dr. Hirsch’s team from Neuroradiology with
help from Clay Schwabe, Ryan Donohue and Evan Sussman)
and Team Osteoblastic (Dr. Fran Hornicek, Dr. Kevin Raskin,
Jay Loeffler and Dr. Will Curry) with Team Wedge Fracture
edging out their competition in a tie breaker. Third Place
went to Team Osteolysis (8 under par) (Dr. Harry Rubash, Dr.
Joe McCarthy, Sue Don and Chris Cahill).
The prestigious Dr. Simmons award was a tight competition
as usual, with Dr. Hedequist garnering the honors for
falling out of his golf cart while trying to complete a drive-by
golf ball pick-up.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this
event, especially the generous attendings from our program
who sponsored residents and fellows thereby making this
event possible. I would especially like to acknowledge Stephen
Gardner who was the co-organizer of the event, and will
be taking the reigns next year with assistance from Jeff
Jaglowski. Courtney Dawson was a huge help in setting up
and checking in everyone. I would also like to acknowledge
Carolynn DiRienzo and Diane Sheehan who worked tirelessly
behind the scenes to ensure that the tournament could go on
without a hitch. Thanks to everyone who participated in this
event this year.
