Dr. Vrahas again hosted the popular Iron Chef event at his
home on June 12th. Competitors included Dr. Mark Vrahas,
Dr. Michael Weaver, Dr. Olivia Pate, and for his last hurrah, Dr.
John Abraham. Notable sous chefs included prior Champion
Dr. Kevin Riche who assisted with Dr. Vrahas' New Orleans
comfort food theme, the mashed potato queen Dr. Cheri
Weaver, and Olivia's secret weapon, her Mom. The ingredients
this year were lamb, tomato, and fresh-caught fish from the
Boston Harbor. The competitors were given free access to Dr.
Gregory Brick's boat and fishing guide to catch our dinner the
day before, returning with an impressive haul of fresh cod.
After much sweating over stoves and outdoor deep fryers, the
dishes were served with an introduction by each chef. Dream
Weaver's team won accolades for both the best lamb dish and
best tomato dish, serving a slow-roasted lamb shoulder over
mashed potatoes with a mint-caper sauce and fried green
tomatoes with a spicy remoulade. Olivia and family produced
the winning fish dish with an Asian-inspired sake miso cod fish
taco with napa slaw, wasabi cream, and soy syrup. The overall
points winner and this year's Iron Chef Award went to the up
and coming new traumateer Olivia Pate.
The dessert competition continued this year with entries
from Dr. Springfield's wife, returning champion Dr. Nikki
Fetter and this year's winners, Dr. Mike Banffy's and Dr. Brett
Shore's wives (Emily and Amy) who made chocolate cupcakes
with a delightfully sugar-overloaded frosting.
The true winners were the residents and attendings who
gathered to enjoy this yearly tradition because, as Dr. Mitch
Harris stated upon departure, "It's not the winning that's important,
it’s the culinary journey that counts."
